Beat Shazam Is Just The Feel Good Show America Needs Right Now

Last night I caught my first episode of Beat Shazam and let me tell you, this show is just the kind of feel good show that America needs right now.

If you and I are friends on Facebook than you know I’ve been thinking about broadening my blogging horizons lately. I actually considered writing about American Horror Story (I know right?) but upon further consideration, I decided not to disseminate any more blood and gore into the world. We see enough of that daily on the news. So I’m going to go a different direction, one that elicits the Feel Goods. This show had me covered in chill bumps and misty eyed, I had to tell you all about it.

Beat Shazam starring Jamie Foxx is a game show where the contestants get to flex their musical muscle and win some serious cash, up to 1 Million dollars. For those of you who don’t know, Shazam is an app that identifies songs when you play them out loud. It has saved many a brain racking moment for me in the past. It’s awesome. It can identify pretty much any song you play for it within about three to five seconds in my experience

Guests come on in three groups of two.  On the episode last night, the contestants were two bro friends, a couple that was hoping to win money for their wedding and families, and the gal theat wrote the song “Let This Groove” for Earth, Wind and Fire and her husband.

In each round they are played a song by the shows lovely “DJ October” and the contestants have to hit their buzzer and match the song with it’s title, naturally the person that buzzes in first wins. One of the best things about the show is the music selection. The first song that they played was I want To Know What Love Is by Foreigner. When they played that song everybody in the house was on their feet singing at the top of their lungs -including me, at home. That was the first huge feel-good moment, less than five minutes into the show. The best part is that October lets the songs play for a few seconds so the audience has a chance to rock out to it.

She played some great hits from U2, plenty of Hip Hop, Motown, and Alternative.  They even played a round of TV theme songs and the first one they played was the theme from Friends so you know I was all in at that point.

Unfortunately the Bro friends and the hitmaker/ hubby- duo did not get to go to the final round. The engaged couple were the lucky ones in this episode. For the final round they had to decide between the two of them who would play as only one of them could. The bride-to-be was on Deck and she knew she had it.

The final song that was played was Shout by Tears for Fears. Incidentally, one of my mother’s absolute favorite songs, Hi Mama! The bride knew the song immediately and buzzed in. Jamie asked her the name of the song and she said “SHOUT!”

The next few seconds is what actually inspired me to write this post. For one, the look on Jamie Foxx’s face when she said the word “shout” was everything. Earlier in the program the couple had explained that they wanted to have a beautiful wedding and both of their families had had gone through some pretty hard times and they wanted to help them out financially. Jamie knew she had the right answer and he literally had tears in his eyes, so did I.

I’m going to go ahead and spoil it for you, they won the million dollars. It was awesome. One of my favorite things in the world is watching people win on game shows. One of my other favorite things in this world is music. And you know one of my other favorite things in this world is me some Jamie Foxx. He even retweeted me during the show. We’re best friends now obviously.

If you’re like me and you find the world we’re living in a little too crazy to deal with sometimes lately, I highly recommend this show for a little mini Escape from the chaos. If you give it a watch let me know what you think in the comments or join me on Twitter to live tweet the show next week. I hope y’all enjoy it as much as I do.
